“A huge welcome to Exeter Saracens RFC! At the heart of our junior section is a vibrant culture of inclusion, enjoyment, and player development. We are incredibly proud to have RFU Level 1 and Level 2 qualified coaches embedded across all our age groups, ensuring that every child learns the game safely and to the highest standard. None of this would be possible without our fantastic community of parent volunteers, whose dedication and passion are the backbone of junior rugby at the Sarries. Whether your child is picking up a rugby ball for the very first time or looking to develop their skills further, we are always keen to welcome new players and families to our club.”
Best wishes,
Darren Wright, Junior Chairman
Age Grade Rugby Sections at Exeter Saracens RFC
Early Years: Under 6 to Under 8 (Preschool – Year 3)
-
This foundational stage focuses on introduction, fun, and building confidence through Tag Rugby (a non-contact format). Mixed-gender rugby is fully integrated here, encouraging boys and girls to learn core movement skills, agility, and spatial awareness together in a safe, inclusive environment.
-
At Exeter Saracens RFC: Our youngest players learn the basics, build social skills, and make their first friends at the club through fun, non-contact games guided by our qualified coaching team.
Intermediate Stage: Under 9 to Under 13 (Year 4 – Year 8)
-
As children grow, the game introduces contact gradually and safely, alongside expanding participation formats. Up to Under 11, mixed-gender rugby remains supported, while dedicated options like the dual Girls' Under 11/12 age band help retain players wanting girls-only rugby. Above Under 11/12, the game transitions to separate gender teams (dedicated boys' teams and girls-only teams).
-
At Exeter Saracens RFC: A crucial transitional phase where players build technical proficiency in contact. The club accommodates mixed or girls-only pathways appropriately depending on the age band, ensuring players transition smoothly into structured team environments and festivals.
Youth Stage: Under 14 to Under 18 (Year 9 – Year 13)
-
The older junior section features separate gender teams playing the full progression of the sport (moving towards 15-a-side contact rugby on full-sized pitches). It focuses on refined tactical understanding, specialised positions, physical conditioning, and leadership under strict RFU Regulation 15 safety standards.
-
At Exeter Saracens RFC: Representing the pinnacle of the youth section (all the way up to the Colts), these dedicated boys' and girls' squads prepare teenagers for adult community rugby with experienced, high-level coaching that balances competitive spirit with lifelong club loyalty.
