Saturday 13th September saw both senior sides in action the 1st XV travelling away to Devonport, while the 2nd XV hosted Teignmouth at home. Unfortunately, both sides fell on the wrong side of the result, but there were plenty of positives to take forward.
1st XV vs Devonport (Away)
The lads started brightly, with a strong maul from a lineout resulting in the opening score. Devonport, however, found their rhythm and began to dictate play. Sarries struggled to adapt defensively in the first half, allowing the hosts to build a commanding lead.
Head Coach Tom Whitford reflected:
> “It was a real shame to struggle in the first half and not get a grasp quick enough of the defensive shape needed. This allowed the gap to grow, and despite a much-improved second half, it was just too much to claw back.”
There were some standout performances despite the result – Wes Burden put in a massive shift all over the pitch, and Gary Owen lived up to his nickname ‘Gary the Carry’ with some powerful runs. The backs also looked sharp when given ball in hand, showing promise for the weeks ahead.
2nd XV vs Teignmouth (Home)
The scoreline may suggest a tough day, but it doesn’t tell the full story. For a large portion of the game, the score was 20–7, and the boys dug deep, working hard for each other.
One of the real positives has been the integration of our younger players into men’s rugby. A huge shout out to the colts stepping up: Aydan Bowen, Zack West, Harry Worthington, Josh Goodchild, Freddie Hancock, and Ben Parr. It’s fantastic to see the next generation making their mark and forcing the older lads to pick up the pace!
*Looking Ahead*
This weekend, the 2nd XV travel to Exmouth 3s with a strong side and renewed confidence. Training this week focused on tightening defensive shape, grafting for each other, and building squad togetherness, the boys are ready to go again.
The Colts face a big challenge away to Ivybridge, while on Sunday, the Women’s 1st XV take on Cullompton 2s at home on the main pitch. Their energy and commitment at training has been outstanding, and they’ll be looking to put on a performance!
Good luck to all our sides this weekend – UTS!
